Ls1/ls6 cam(s)
OK so I figured I'd start this because the ls1 has been gaining interest in a lot of motor sports and its gives me an excuse to do research. Seeing as a lot of people with the ls1/ls6 like to get power for cheep, a lot of people are simply swapping in a more aggressive cam. Why you may ask, well here are the stock ls1/ls6 cam specs;
Stock ls1 cam:
98-00
202/210 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.496" / 0.496" int/exh lift
116 LSA
--------------------------------
01-02
197/207 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.467" / 0.479" int/exh lift
116 LSA

Stock ls6 cam
01
207/217 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
116 LSA
--------------------------------
02+
204/218 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.551" / 0.547" int/exh lift
117 LSA

As you can see there is much to be desired. on the stock ls1/ls6 there is a lot of wriggle room, a good general parameter is keep the cam under .610 lift and you will not run in to massive problems but you should all ways check your valve clearance to make sure you don't have too much lift. Some of the most popular cams for the ls1/ls6 engines are the
Magic Stick (MS) 3
237/242 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
.603"/.609" int/exh lift
111-115LSA (specified when ordered)

Torquer V2
232/234 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
.595/.598 int/exh lift

There are many more mild to wild cams out on the market, and for a little more cash you can get a custom grind cam. It is true that you can simply drop one of these cams in but you might not want to do that. The best thing to do is at least put on long tube headers. However this can be unsafe. The GM push-rods and valve springs are not up to par for these cams and can catastrophically malfunction. So in my book a good set of valve springs and hardened push-rods(aka Chrome-moly) are a must. I would recommend the Precision Race Component(PRC) spring kit & push-rod Kit. This kit includes double springs rated to .650" lift Titanium retainers spring seats and seals as well as a choice in TSP chrome-moly push-rods; stock length is 7.400". the PRC spring kit utilized the stock GM valve stem locks. My good friend Brian at RPT sells this kit for $380 +s&h which saves you about $30 if you were to buy the push-rods and valve springs separately. Long tube headers, hardened push-rods and good valve springs are in my opinion the minimum supporting mods needed for a "cam only" ls1/ls6. For those who do not take chances, you will want to invest a little more. The next step would be a high volume oil pump(ls6 oil pump is normally enough), then a single row timing chain, ARP head bolts, comp cams rocker trunion upgrade kit, and all new gaskets, and or new lifters. Also it is not a bad idea to change out fluids if it has been a while, and check your belts.
